Wig maintenance appointments: cleaning, restyling, repairs

Drop-off or while-you-wait, how often to service a wig, what to check and how to plan collection: organising maintenance appointments as a wig maker.

Split wig maintenance into two kinds of appointments: short ones where the client waits or leaves the piece for the day — a wash and set, a quick restyle, a clip replaced — and longer drop-offs for repairs, re-knotting or a new cap, with a collection appointment booked at the same time. Give each service its own slot length, inspect the piece with the client at drop-off so you agree on what needs doing, and make sure clients who wear a wig every day have a spare or a loan piece while theirs is with you. Regular servicing keeps the piece looking natural and lasting longer.

Why maintenance deserves its own appointments

A wig or hairpiece worn regularly collects styling products, loses shape, and wears at the hairline and the clips. Clients can wash a piece at home, but a professional service restores what home care can't: shape, density, a clean hairline. Handling maintenance through booked appointments rather than unannounced visits lets you plan workshop time, keep the piece's history, and avoid the situation where a client needs their only wig back the same afternoon.

The services to offer

  • Wash and set: cleaning, conditioning and restyling to the original cut.
  • Restyle: a new cut, fringe or shape on an existing piece.
  • Repairs: clips, combs, tape tabs, a torn cap, a thinned hairline.
  • Re-knotting or density work: adding hair where it has thinned.
  • Colour refresh: where the hair type allows it.
  • Fit check: adjusting the cap if the client's head measurements or hair have changed.

Drop-off or while-you-wait

Some jobs fit into an hour or two: a quick restyle, a clip replaced, a fit check. The client can wait in a private area or come back later the same day. Others need drying time, careful handwork or materials: a full wash and set, re-knotting, a cap repair. Those are drop-offs, and the piece stays with you for days. Be clear in each service description which kind it is, so clients know before they book whether they'll leave with their piece.

The inspection at drop-off

Look at the piece together: hairline, parting, knots, cap, clips, and any damage from heat or products. Agree on what you'll do and on the price before the client leaves, and note anything you'll only know once the piece is cleaned. If you find more work needed, call before doing it.

Clients who wear their wig every day

For a client with a single piece, a drop-off can mean days without it. Suggest a second piece for rotation, a ready-made loan piece, or a while-you-wait service where possible. Plan drop-offs so that collection falls before a date that matters to them.

How often to service a wig

It depends on the hair type, how often it's worn, the climate and the products used. Rather than a fixed rule, look at the piece at each visit and suggest when the next service would make sense. Clients who know when to come back avoid the moment when the piece looks tired and they need it fixed at once.

Keeping a record of each piece

Note the date of each service, what was done, the products used and anything to watch next time. When the client comes back, you can see how the piece has aged and suggest a repair or a replacement at the right moment, rather than guessing.

Booking maintenance with Book

On Book, each service has a name, a price and an optional description shown on your public page. Open slots for each service at the length it takes: a short slot for a drop-off inspection, longer ones for while-you-wait work. For drop-offs, book the collection yourself from your calendar at the drop-off, so both dates are fixed; first and last name are required, email and phone optional. Repeat slots each week on chosen weekdays until a date.

Durations and prices are examples: set your own, and say in the description whether the price is final or confirmed after inspection. Clients can't move bookings online: they contact you, you reschedule or cancel from your bookings list and let them know yourself, since Book doesn't email clients about changes. Calendar sync (Google, iPhone, Mac) keeps drop-offs and collections next to your consultations. Book costs €5/month, everything included: unlimited services and bookings, no commission, no contract.

Should clients wait or leave their wig?
It depends on the job. Quick restyles and small repairs can be done while they wait; full cleaning and re-knotting need a drop-off.
How do I make sure the client collects on time?
Book the collection yourself from your calendar at the drop-off, so both appointments are fixed.
What if I find more damage once the wig is cleaned?
Call the client before doing extra work, and agree on the price first.
