Driving lessons: lesson lengths, pickups and travel time

Create one service per lesson length, for example one hour, ninety minutes and two hours, and open slots that follow each other with a gap for driving to the next pickup. Ask learners to write their pickup address in the booking note, and say in the description which areas you cover. With one car, you can only be in one place at a time, so the plan is simple: no overlapping slots, and enough travel time between them.

Lengths and prices are examples. On Book, a service has a name, an optional description and a price. The length comes from the slots you open for it: each slot belongs to one service with its own start and end. A learner who picks the two-hour lesson only sees two-hour slots.

Between two learners, you may drive across town. Book doesn't know where your learners live, so the gap is yours to plan. A few ideas:

Book doesn't stop slots of different services from overlapping. If you open one-hour and two-hour slots at the same time, two learners could book the same car. Choose one layout per day or half-day, and repeat each pattern on its weekdays until an end date.

The booking form asks for first name, last name, email and phone, plus an optional note. In each service description, ask learners to write:

You receive an email for each new booking with the note, so you can plan the route the evening before. The learner receives a confirmation with a calendar file. Say in the description which areas you pick up in, so learners outside them know to meet you elsewhere.

A regular slot each week helps learners keep a rhythm. Once you agree a time, you can book several weeks ahead yourself from your calendar: first and last name are required, and if you enter the learner's email, they get a confirmation for each lesson. Book doesn't send reminders, so a set of dates in the learner's calendar does that job. Parents booking for a teenager can book in their own name and write the learner's name in the note.

A first lesson with a new learner is partly an assessment: controls, first moves in a quiet street, a first idea of how many hours they may need. Give it its own service, so you know from the booking that this is someone new. In the description, say what to bring, such as a provisional licence or the documents your country requires, and where you'll start. At the end of the lesson, agree the next dates together and book them before the learner gets out of the car.

Learners can't move bookings online. Say in your descriptions how much notice you need and how to reach you. When you reschedule or cancel from your bookings list, Book doesn't email the learner, so confirm the new time by phone or message. If a lesson is cancelled at short notice, the slot becomes free; you can send your booking link to learners who asked for extra lessons.
