Chimney sweeping before winter: spreading the autumn rush

Everyone remembers the chimney when it gets cold: how sweeps can open bookings early, group visits by area and fill the season without a phone backlog.

Open your autumn bookings early, in late summer, and tell last year's customers the page is open: the ones who book in September are the ones who won't be calling you in a panic in November. Create services by appliance, such as an open fire, a wood burner or a boiler flue, with realistic slot lengths, and group each day's slots in one area so your travel time stays short. Keep a few gaps each week for smoke problems that can't wait.

Why the season jams

For a chimney sweep, demand follows the thermometer. Through spring and summer, few people think about their flue. With the first cold evenings, everyone wants their chimney swept before lighting the first fire, and they all call in the same few weeks. The phone rings during jobs, messages pile up, and customers wait weeks for a visit they could have booked in August.

A booking page doesn't create more hours in October, but it moves demand earlier and takes the scheduling off your phone. Customers see the free slots, pick one, and you get the booking by email with the address and details.

Services by appliance

On Book, each service has a name, a price and an optional description shown on your public page. Each slot belongs to one service, with its own start and end. Customers pick a service, then a free slot. With one place per slot, a booked slot is full and disappears from your page.

ServiceExample slotExample price
Open fireplace sweep1 h€70
Wood burner or stove sweep1 h€75
Pellet stove sweep and service1 h 30€110
Boiler flue sweep45 min€60
Two appliances, same house1 h 30€120

Lengths and prices are examples: set your own. Say in each description what's included, such as the sweeping certificate, and what could add time on site, such as a bird's nest or a blocked cowl.

Spreading the season

  1. Open early: create your autumn slots in late summer, so customers can book as soon as they think about it.
  2. Remind past customers: send last year's customers your booking page link by email or text at the end of summer.
  3. Area days: assign each weekday to part of your area, and say in each description which towns each day covers.
  4. Repeat by weekday: create the slots on each area day and repeat them every week until the end of the season.
  5. Keep gaps: leave a slot or two free each week for smoke coming back into the room or a blocked flue.

Customers outside the day's area may still book it. When that happens, call them, offer a slot on their area's day, and move the booking from your bookings list. Book doesn't email them about the change, so confirm the new time yourself.

Travel between slots

A one-hour job with twenty minutes of driving each way doesn't fit in back-to-back one-hour slots. Build the travel into the gaps between slots on area days. For outlying villages, one option is a separate service with a longer slot and a travel supplement in the price.

The rest of the year

Outside the peak, fewer slots are enough. Keep a lighter schedule in spring and summer, and use it for jobs that need more time: flue inspections, cowl and bird guard fitting, stove servicing. Customers who book a sweep in spring get it done on a quiet day, and you get a head start on the autumn. Say it on your page: "Book now, avoid the autumn wait."

Customers who call can still be booked: pick a free slot in your calendar and enter their name; email and phone are optional, and with the email they get a confirmation and a calendar file. Customers can't move bookings online: they contact you, and you reschedule or cancel from your list. Book doesn't take payments, so say how you're paid on the day. Book costs €5/month, everything included: unlimited services and bookings, no commission, no contract.
