How to plan puppy classes: rolling or fixed courses?

Puppy classes can run in two ways: as rolling classes that a puppy can join any week, or as fixed courses where the same group starts and finishes together. Rolling classes let owners start as soon as their puppy is ready, which matters when puppies change so quickly; fixed courses give a clear progression and a stable group. Whichever you choose, set a clear age range and any health requirements in the class description, keep the group small enough to handle, and open the classes far enough ahead that new owners can book before their puppy outgrows them.
Why timing matters with puppies
An owner who picks up a puppy wants to start as soon as possible, and a few weeks' wait feels long when the puppy is growing every day. If your next course starts in a month and is already full, that owner will look elsewhere. On the other side, puppies of very different ages and sizes in the same group don't always mix well. Your planning has to balance both: quick access and coherent groups.

Rolling classes fit online booking naturally: owners book the next class each week, or you book it for them. For fixed courses, you need a way to keep the group together, which is covered below.
Setting up rolling puppy classes
On Book, each type of class is a service with its own price and optional description, and you open slots for each at the length it takes. Create a "Puppy class" service and open a weekly slot, repeated on the same weekday until an end date you choose. Set the number of places to the number of puppies you want in the group. Each owner books one place; when the class is full, it disappears from your page and owners see the next one.
Owners who come every week can book the following class at the end of each session, or you can book their next classes yourself from your calendar.
Setting up a fixed course
Slots sit within a single day, and each booking from your page is for one slot. For a course over several weeks, you have two options:
- Book the first session, then the rest yourself: open the first session of the course as a slot with the number of places you want, and list all the dates in the description. Open the following sessions under a separate service, described as reserved for puppies already enrolled, and book each enrolled owner into them yourself from your calendar. Once every place is booked, those sessions no longer show on your page.
- Open every session and ask owners to book them all: simpler for you, but an owner might miss one, and someone else could take the place.
The first option keeps the group stable. The second suits a course where missing a session isn't a problem.
Age and health requirements
Write the age range for each class in its description, for example the youngest and oldest age you accept. If you require vaccinations or a vet's go-ahead before a puppy joins, say so and tell owners what to bring on the first day. Owners can use the optional booking note to give the puppy's age and breed, which helps you prepare and spot a puppy that would fit better in another group.
If you run several age groups, make each one its own service, so owners pick the right group directly from your page.
Group size and space
Puppies need space, and owners need your attention. The right number depends on your training area, whether you have an assistant and the size of the puppies. Set it once in the number of places on the slot and keep it the same, so every class has room for play, rest and exercises.
Book doesn't set a minimum number of bookings. If a class is too small to run, cancel it from your bookings list and contact the owners yourself, since Book doesn't email them when you cancel, and offer them the next class.
