Freelance DBAs: booking database health check sessions
How freelance DBAs can sell database health checks clients book online: scope, access before the session, the review call, the written report and follow-ups.
6 min read
Package your database health check as a fixed-scope service clients book online: a kick-off call to agree scope and access, analysis time on your side, and a review call where you walk through the findings. Say in the description what the check covers, such as performance, backups, security, configuration and growth, and what the client receives: a written report with priorities. Clients know exactly what they're buying and when, and findings turn naturally into planned maintenance work.
A fixed-scope service
A health check sells better with a clear scope and price than as open-ended consulting. On Book, each service has a name, a price and an optional description shown on your public page, and each slot belongs to one service, sits within one day and has its own capacity.
| Service | Example slot | Example price |
|---|---|---|
| Health check kick-off call | 30 min | Free |
| Health check review call | 1 h | €450 |
| Quarterly health check, existing clients | 1 h | €300 |
| Performance deep dive | 2 h | €500 |
Durations and prices are examples: set your own. The review call price can cover your analysis time; say so in the description.
What the check covers
- backups: schedule, retention and a tested restore;
- performance: slow queries, indexes, resource use;
- configuration and versions, including support end dates;
- security: accounts, permissions and exposure;
- growth: storage trends and capacity for the next year.
Say in the description which database systems you cover, and what's outside the check, such as application code or infrastructure you don't manage.
Access before the session
The analysis happens between the kick-off and the review. In the kick-off call, agree read-only access, the time window for your analysis and who on the client's side can answer questions. Keep credentials out of the booking note, since it appears in the client's calendar file; exchange them through a secure channel. The booking form takes first name, last name, email and phone, plus an optional note that reaches you in the new booking email; ask there for the system, its size and the main concern.
Booking the review call
At the end of the kick-off, book the review call yourself from your calendar, leaving enough days for your analysis. First and last name are required, email and phone optional; enter the client's email so they receive a confirmation with a calendar file. Ask the client to invite the people who'll act on the findings.
The report
Send the written report before or right after the review call, with findings sorted by priority: fix now, plan soon, watch. For each item, say what to do and how long it takes. Items that need downtime become maintenance windows, which the client can book from your page or you can book for them.
Recurring checks
A quarterly or half-yearly check catches problems before they grow. Offer it as its own service at a lower price for existing clients, and book the next one yourself at the end of each review. Book doesn't send reminders, so the date already in the client's calendar is what keeps the routine.
Before a migration or upgrade
A health check is also a good first step before a major upgrade or a move to new hardware or the cloud. Offer a pre-migration variant in the description, focused on compatibility, data volumes and the rollback plan, and use its report to size the maintenance windows the migration will need.
Sharing the link
Add your booking link to proposals, your email signature and your profile on freelance platforms, so prospects can book the kick-off call as soon as they decide.
Opening slots
Kick-off and review calls fit in daytime slots on set weekdays, away from your maintenance nights. Slots repeat each week on the weekdays you choose until an end date. If you take only a few health checks a month, open a few kick-off slots and end the series when you're full. A booked slot leaves your page.
Changes
Clients can't move bookings online: they contact you, and you move the call from your bookings list and confirm it yourself, since Book doesn't email clients about changes. Book doesn't take payments or create video links: say how the check is invoiced and put your meeting link in the description. Your bookings sync with Google, iPhone or Mac calendars. Book costs €5/month, everything included: unlimited services and bookings, no commission, no contract.
