Circus skills workshops for groups: running them well

Juggling, balance and plate spinning: how street performers set group sizes, ages, space, safety and session formats for circus skills workshops booked online.

A circus skills workshop works when every participant gets a first success within minutes. Choose skills that suit the age and the space, such as juggling scarves, diabolo, plate spinning or balance boards, cap the group size so you can help everyone, and plan short rounds that end with a small show. Offer open workshops where each person books a place, and private sessions for parties, schools and companies that book the whole group. Both formats can be booked online.

Choosing skills by age

  • Young children: scarves, ribbons, balancing feathers, simple plate spinning; quick wins and lots of movement.
  • Older children and teens: balls, diabolo, devil sticks, beginner balance boards.
  • Adults and teams: juggling progressions, partner tricks, a short group routine to finish.
  • Mixed family groups: stations with different levels, so each person picks a challenge.

Group size and session length

Set a maximum group size that lets you see every participant, and add an assistant for larger groups. Keep sessions short for young children and longer for adults who want to progress. Split the time into rounds: a demonstration, practice at stations, a skill check, and a final mini show where everyone performs one trick. Leave time at the start to hand out props and at the end to collect them.

Space and safety

Ask about the space before you agree: ceiling height for diabolo, a flat floor without obstacles, room for stations. Use soft props for young children, keep balance equipment low with a spotter, and agree rules at the start: wait your turn, put props down when you hear the signal. Check your insurance covers workshops as well as performances.

Open workshops and private bookings

Open workshops at a community hall or a studio fill place by place, which suits families and adults who come alone. Private bookings suit children's parties, school days and team-building events: the organiser books the whole group and you adapt the content. For private sessions, a short call beforehand settles the number of participants, ages, space and the goal of the session.

Series for regular learners

Participants who catch the bug want to come back. A weekly series of workshops lets them progress from three-ball juggling to tricks and passing. Offer the series as its own service so they can book every session at once.

Props and logistics

Count props per participant plus spares, and bring a bag for each station so set-up is quick. Say in the description whether participants can buy a starter set at the end, and what they should wear: comfortable clothes and flat shoes.

Children's parties

For a birthday, agree with the parent who is responsible for the children during the workshop, where the cake and presents fit in the timeline, and whether the birthday child should have a special role in the final show. The final show gives the children a moment to perform for their parents.

School workshops

Schools need sessions that fit the timetable, sometimes one class after another in the same hall. Agree the number of classes, the length of each session and the breaks with the teacher, and ask whether a teacher stays in the room. Circus skills link well with physical education, so explain what the children practise: coordination, balance, patience and working in pairs.

Booking workshops with Book

On Book, each service has a name, a price and an optional description shown on your public page. Create an "Open circus workshop" service and give its slots a capacity equal to the group size, so each participant books a place; when all places are booked, the slot no longer appears on your public page. Create separate services for private sessions and the booking call. Slots can repeat weekly, and each slot belongs to one service and sits within a single day. Participants book with their name, email and phone and can add ages or the event details in the optional note, which you read in your new-booking email. A parent can book several places for siblings, or you can add them from your calendar with a number of persons.

Book costs €5/month, all-inclusive: unlimited services and bookings, no commission, no commitment.
