Furniture drop-off at the upholstery workshop by appointment
Loading bay, floor space, a condition check with the client: how upholsterers can schedule furniture drop-offs and returns so the workshop never overflows.
6 min read
Take furniture in by appointment only, on drop-off slots you open when you know you'll have floor space and time to start the job. Each client books a short slot, arrives when the loading area is free, and goes through a quick condition check with you before leaving the piece. When the job is done, the client books a return slot the same way. The workshop fills at the pace you can work, and nobody arrives with a three-seater sofa while you're mid-way through stapling a chair.
Why drop-offs need slots
An upholstery workshop runs out of floor space long before it runs out of work. A sofa waiting for its turn takes the room of two armchairs in progress, and pieces stacked in a corner get knocked or dusty. Unplanned drop-offs also interrupt work that shouldn't stop: glue setting, fabric pinned in place, a pattern being matched.
Drop-off slots let you decide when pieces arrive: when a job finishes and space frees up, and when you have ten minutes to receive the client properly.
What happens at drop-off
- Unload together: the client helps carry the piece in, or you meet them at the loading area.
- Condition check: look at the piece together and note existing damage (scratched legs, cracked joints, loose veneer), with photos.
- Confirm the job: fabric, trims, cushions, anything that changed since the quote.
- Label the piece: client's name and job reference on every part, including loose cushions and legs taken off.
- Give an expected ready date: an estimate, which you confirm once the fabric has arrived and the work has started.
The condition check protects both sides. A scratch noticed together at drop-off doesn't turn into a dispute at collection.
Setting up drop-off and return services
On Book, each service has a name, a price and an optional description shown on your public page. You open slots for each service at the length it takes; clients pick a service, then a free slot. One place per slot, since the loading area takes one vehicle at a time.
| Service | Example slot | Example price |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture drop-off at the workshop | 15 min | Free |
| Collection of finished furniture | 15 min | Free |
| Pickup at home by the upholsterer | 1 h | €40 |
| Delivery and placement at home | 1 h | €40 |
Durations and prices are examples: set your own. In the drop-off description, give the address, where to park, whether there are steps, and what to bring (all cushions, removable legs in a bag, the fabric if the client supplies it).
Opening slots only when there's room
Don't open drop-off slots weeks ahead by default. Open them in small batches, when you can see space freeing up, or keep a fixed short window, for example one morning a week, and delete the slots when the workshop is full. When a client has accepted a quote and needs a specific time, create a slot for them and book them in yourself from your calendar: first and last name are required, email and phone optional. With one place, a booked slot is full and no longer shown on your page.
What to ask in the booking note
The public booking form asks for first name, last name, email and phone, plus an optional note you read in your new-booking email. Ask for the quote reference or the date of the quote visit, and the pieces being dropped off. The note can't be edited once the booking exists, so put the questions in the service description.
When the job is ready
Tell the client the piece is ready and send your booking page link for a collection slot, or offer delivery. If they can't make any of the times shown, create a slot for them. At collection, look at the finished piece together, explain how to care for the fabric, and hand back anything the client asked to keep, such as original studs or a maker's label found under the old cover. Clients can't move bookings online: they contact you, and you reschedule or cancel from your bookings list, then let them know yourself, since Book doesn't email them about changes. Book costs €5/month, everything included: unlimited services and bookings, no commission, no contract.
