Windscreen chip repairs: quick slots before a crack spreads
Size, position, age of the impact: how vehicle glaziers can offer short chip repair appointments, decide repair versus replacement, and fit them into busy days.
6 min read
Offer chip repairs as short, easy-to-book appointments, with slots available in the days ahead rather than weeks, because an impact left alone can spread into a crack that needs a full replacement. Ask for a photo and the position of the chip when clients book, so you can tell straight away whether a repair makes sense. Clients get a quick fix before the damage grows, and you fill gaps between longer replacement jobs with work that takes little time.
Why speed matters
A small impact can stay stable for weeks, or turn into a long crack after a cold night, a pothole or a blast of the heater on a frozen screen. Dirt and moisture also get into it, which makes the repair less clean. A client who can book a slot in the next few days is more likely to come before that happens than one who is told to wait two weeks.
Say it in the service description: the sooner a chip is repaired, the better the chances the repair works, and that meanwhile a transparent sticker over the impact can keep dirt out.
Repair or replace?
- Size: small impacts can usually be repaired; long cracks can't. Set your own limits based on your equipment and local rules.
- Position: an impact in the driver's direct line of sight or at the edge of the glass may call for replacement.
- Type: some impact shapes repair better than others; say what you can do.
- Age and dirt: an old, dirty chip may leave a more visible mark after repair.
- Number of impacts: several chips close together may make replacement the better choice.
Tell the client honestly what to expect: a repair stops the damage from spreading and improves the look, but a faint mark can remain.
Setting up the service
On Book, each service has a name, a price and an optional description shown on your public page. You open slots for each service at the length it takes, one place per slot. Clients pick a service, then a free slot.
| Service | Example slot | Example price |
|---|---|---|
| Chip repair at the workshop | 30 min | €60 |
| Chip repair at home or work | 45 min | €70 |
| Second chip on the same screen | 15 min | €25 |
| Assessment: repair or replace | 15 min | Free |
Durations and prices are examples: set your own. Short slots fit around longer jobs: at the start of the day, before a replacement, or at lunchtime. Repeat them each week on chosen weekdays until a date so there's always a slot within a few days.
What to ask in the booking note
The public booking form asks for first name, last name, email and phone, plus an optional note you read in your new-booking email. Ask for the registration, where the chip is on the screen, roughly how big it is, and how long ago it happened. Ask for a photo by email, taken from outside with a coin next to the impact for scale. The note can't be edited once the booking exists, so put the questions in the service description.
Walk-ins and fleet clients
Chip repairs are the kind of job people ask for on the spot. If a driver walks in and a gap allows, do it; if not, book them into the next free short slot from your calendar while they're at the counter: first and last name are required, email and phone optional. For companies with several vehicles, offer a morning where you check and repair every screen in their car park, with one slot per vehicle and the registration in each note. Small chips caught during a fleet check are cheaper for the company than replacements later.
When a repair turns into a replacement
Sometimes the chip has already spread by the time the client arrives, or turns out to be in a position you can't repair. Explain why, then offer a replacement slot. You can reschedule the existing booking from your bookings list to a replacement slot with a free place, even though it's another service, and let the client know the new time yourself, since Book doesn't email clients about changes.
With calendar sync (Google, iPhone, Mac), quick repairs sit next to replacements in one calendar. Book doesn't take payments; it handles appointments. It costs €5/month, everything included: unlimited services and bookings, no commission, no contract.
